Use hay to offer a choice in a question: Bạn uống trà hay cà phê? Use hoặc in statements to say either one is possible: Bạn có thể uống trà hoặc cà phê. Mixing them up is a very common mistake.

Tip: Rule of thumb: question → hay, statement → hoặc.
