Pattern

A + nói / bảo / hỏi + (rằng) + [clause]

To report speech, use nói (say), bảo (tell) or hỏi (ask), then the sentence itself. Rằng (that) is optional: Anh ấy nói (rằng) anh ấy bận. Nothing in the sentence changes tense. Use nghĩ (think) or thấy (feel, find) in the same way: Tôi nghĩ bạn đúng.

Tip: Use bảo with a person to give an instruction: Mẹ bảo tôi về sớm.

Anh ấy nói rằng anh ấy sẽ đến muộn.
He said that he would be late.
Cô giáo bảo chúng tôi làm bài tập.
The teacher told us to do the homework.
Chị ấy hỏi tôi có đói không.
She asked me whether I was hungry.
Tôi nghĩ ngày mai trời sẽ nắng.
I think it will be sunny tomorrow.
